Twelve Senses Retreat

(Encinitas)

This a four-unit micro bed and breakfast was built as an addition to an existing 1958 single-family residence. It was designed with holistic well-being and sustainability as its guiding principles. The owner, a materials designer by trade, selected primarily recycled, reclaimed and natural materials throughout the construction and furnishing of the project. A few examples include recycled leather wallpaper, recycled newspaper insulation, durable shou sugi ban burnt wood exterior siding, beetle-kill wood interior siding and rapidly renewable alpaca wool bedding. The peaceful and minimalistic design for each of the four rooms is inspired by one of the natural elements – earth, water, fire and air – and meant to enhance connectivity to nature and oneself.
